But are the paintings as innocent as they seem? If you look closer you see many non-idyllic elements: the girls' eyes are grown-up eyes and their sandals have prison bars. They allow us to question the physical qualities which suggest the presence of innocence as consciousness. The corruption of innocence is our only basis for understanding it in the first place. But where does the corruption come from, the artist who depicts the images, providing a basis for understanding, or the viewer, who fills in the blanks of his aesthetic ignorance with emotional issues?
