Friedrich Nietzsche, in Ecce Homo, sets out the relationship between the name of a person, their autobiography and the content of their identity.
My identity is not fixed by guarded and consistent definitions. My identity, according to Nietzsche, does not derive from property but from im-property (from what does not belong to me).
My identity is formed by “the other”-- from people who watch me and interact with me. For that reason I am not a unitary, homogenous, or static persona.
My identity is fragmented by the glance of “the other,” who is only capable of seeing a part of who I am. But they are necessary: through a process of constant construction, the richness of my identity is created through relationships with those ”others” that I am not.
